Student Midwives After Birth

Tomorrow is my birthday, and as I reflect on my journey, I feel incredibly grateful. When I was pregnant, I deeply wanted to change. I wanted to love my children unconditionally and give them the love I felt I never truly received. More than anything, I wanted to break old patterns and be a positive force in my family.
The first major decision I made during pregnancy was to have a home birth. This choice changed my life. I’m proud of this decision because I made it for myself, without seeking anyone’s approval. My husband supported me, and this choice helped me grow in ways I never expected. It also led me to find my purpose in helping others on their own journeys.
Along the way, I met incredible people who are making a difference, including Deanna, the midwife who helped me give birth. Deanna was more than just my midwife—she was also like a doula to me, even before I understood what a doula was. She offered guidance, support, and love that made my pregnancy so much easier. I often think back to the times I sat on her couch, feeling truly understood and cared for. Her compassion and wisdom meant everything to me. Knowing that she’s now teaching others and helping to create more midwives like herself is inspiring.
I met Jenn at our local birth festival. I have so much admiration for midwives—they are the protectors, nurturers, and guides. Jenn was just beginning her journey as a Black midwife, filled with passion and love. Her light shined so brightly. Although Jenn is no longer physically with us, I believe her spirit lives on, surrounded by the granny midwives who came before her. I imagine her welcoming the babies born next to the rainbows, continuing her beautiful work in another realm.
To honor her legacy, I created a painting that shows two student midwives working together as they check over a baby. Jenn is typing notes while Martie gently holds the baby. This painting isn’t just about one moment—it represents a legacy of love, teaching, and community care.
As I reflect on this past year, my heart is full of gratitude for every person who has walked beside me, inspired me, and supported me. This is my tribute to change, love, and the legacy of a woman who gave so much to her community.
